Alec Smith has more than 40 years of geotechnical engineering experience working on a wide variety of public infrastructure involving major bridges, highways, dams, transit facilities, wastewater facilities and public buildings. His most recent experience includes design/build and public/private partnership delivery of major public projects where alternative geotechnical design approaches and their associated risks are assessed during the pre-bid phase.

His technical expertise is focused on geotechnical design, including site characterization; high capacity bridge foundations; mechanically stabilized earth bridge abutments; retaining walls; embankments supported on soft soils using ground improvement methods; slope stabilization; and earthquake impact assessments.

Alec received his Doctorate in geotechnical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He also received a Master of Science in geotechnical engineering from Lehigh University and a Bachelor in civil engineering from the University of Delaware. He is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

What I love about Haley & Aldrich is that the people here are all about moving the technology further along, coming up with new approaches. We love a challenge – and we’re really good at overcoming them.
