Joe Krieter, M.S.

Senior Aquatic Ecologist

Joe leads permitting and compliance, habitat assessment, monitoring, and mitigation and restoration projects related to waterfront, in-water construction, and dredging projects in Oregon, Washington, California, Hawaii, and Alaska. He is an experienced manager, often leading interdisciplinary teams to provide clients with innovative solutions for their complex ecological challenges. For example, Joe has worked with two major Port clients to develop and permit 10-year waterfront maintenance and dredging programs that have dramatically improved implementation assurances and significantly reduced costs. Joe also undertakes unique research projects that are important to project stakeholders and improve our understanding of how sensitive species adapt to their natural habitat.

Joe is a licensed U.S. Coast Guard Captain that is responsible for the operation and maintenance of Haley & Aldrich’s research vessel (R/V Catalyst), which is equipped to perform deep water electrofishing, environmental DNA data collection, sediment sampling, water quality monitoring, and other investigations.

“Innovation is key to success, but we also cannot abandon the tried and true. Often, both are needed. I look for pragmatic and cost-effective solutions – sometimes they’re out of the box and other times we customize. Whatever the solution, I always ensure it’s based on my clients’ needs, goals, risk tolerance, and budget.”
