The Massachusetts legislature recently passed a significant update to the Commonwealth's portfolio standards which will allow, for the first time, productive thermal energy generated from a building's geothermal heating and cooling system to be sold as Renewable Energy Credits (RECs). This change represents a significant milestone in the evolution of RECs. Massachusetts now joins New Hampshire and Maryland, which have also adopted similar updates to their portfolio standards. In this publication, Haley & Aldrich Senior Engineer Kathleen Dorsey provides a brief field guide for the evolving Renewable Energy Credits (RECs), and what they mean to the built environment.
