Haley & Aldrich’s Sakonnet River Bridge project wins a NSBA Merit Award

Boston, MA (March 20, 2014) – Haley & Aldrich received a Merit Award in the Major Span Category for the Sakonnet River Bridge project from the National Steel Bridge Alliance (NSBA). The award entry was submitted by Commonwealth Engineers and Consultants, the lead structural designer for the project. The award will be officially presented at the NSBA Prize Bridge Reception on March 27, 2014. This prestigious award honors significant and innovative steel bridges constructed in the United States, and the category specifically recognizes those bridges with one or more spans greater than or equal to 400 feet.

The Sakonnet River Bridge carries nearly 40,000 cars per day and provides a critical transportation system link between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The State of Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) found it necessary replace the bridge in order to meet highway design standards for shoulder width and structural capacity. Haley & Aldrich completed an extensive subsurface exploration program, provided recommendations for design of shallow and deep foundations, estimated costs for two bridge super structure alternatives, implemented a deep foundation test program, and performed construction monitoring and engineering support during construction. The deep foundations installed to support the river pier structures included 30, six-foot diameter 130 to 200 foot-long steel pipe piles with an innovative internal plate recessed within the pile to generate additional end bearing capacity and reduce pile lengths, and 457, 50 to 120 foot-long 14x117 H-piles, both friction and end bearing. The $120 million, 3,160-foot-long, four-lane bridge was completed on February 28, 2014.

“There were many structural and geotechnical challenges on this project, and as a result, unique and innovative solutions were implemented” said Heather Scranton, Senior Engineer and Project Manager at Haley & Aldrich.

The NSBA Prize Bridge Awards Reception will take place at this year’s World Steel Bridge Symposium in Toronto, Ontario. This bridge and transportation-focused event brings together design engineers, construction professionals, academicians, transportation officials, fabricators, erectors and constructors to discuss and learn state-of-the-art practices for enhancing steel bridge design, fabrication, and construction techniques.
