Haley & Aldrich collaborates with San Diego International Airport to achieve Envision Platinum Award for Sustainable Infrastructure
Published on: June 02, 2016
Haley & Aldrich, an engineering and environmental consulting firm, today announced that its client, the San Diego International Airport, became the first airport in the world to receive the Envision™ Sustainable Infrastructure Platinum Award from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure (ISI). The award is in recognition of the Airport’s Green Build landside project, which demonstrates some of the highest rated levels of social, economic and environmental community impacts of all of the ISI Envision™ verified projects.
"The San Diego International Airport has been committed to sustainability and ensuring that its projects have a positive impact on the environment and surrounding community,” said, Karin Holland, Associate, Haley & Aldrich. “To be the first airport in the world to obtain EnvisionTM certification – and at the highest level, Platinum – is a testament to the San Diego International Airport's commitment to integrating sustainability into its decision making processes. We are delighted that this leadership in the aviation industry, and beyond, is recognized by ISI, and hope this will inspire others to see that making the right decisions for our environment, community, and economy is the best strategy.”
The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority’s Green Build project is only the 13th project in North America to receive an Envision™ rating system award. The Green Build development involved a major expansion of San Diego International Airport’s Terminal 2, which included 10 new gates, a dual-level roadway, enhanced curbside check-in, more security lanes, and an expanded concession area.
“Receiving Envision™ Platinum status for our Green Build project by an objective industry authority such as ISI confirms our belief that this project sets the bar for innovative sustainable infrastructure practices. While we have also achieved LEED certification for the Green Build terminal building, the Envision™ rating system enabled us to rate the sustainability of our infrastructure more holistically and has provided us a path for tracking continuous improvement,” said Paul Manasjan, Director, Environmental Affairs, San Diego International Airport. “Haley & Aldrich has been a great partner through the award process. The team’s expertise in sustainability, and knowledge of the ISI verification process was invaluable,” Manasjan added.
“The San Diego International Green Build project has intentionally included many of the key sustainable infrastructure characteristics in its new development, including many elements from the Quality of Life, Leadership, and Resource Allocation, as well as Natural World and Climate Risk areas, which are part of the Envision system’s rating categories,” said ISI President and CEO, Bill Bertera.
Envision™ is an in-depth guidance and rating system maintained by ISI to assess and improve the sustainability performance of infrastructure projects, including airport projects. Envision™ comprises 60 credits over multiple environmental, social and economic dimensions.
