Burlington, Mass., October 2, 2020 – Haley & Aldrich announced today that several of its contaminated site management experts would present on various topics, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), sediments remediation, and Brownfields development at the 36th Annual International Conference on Soils, Sediments, Water, and Energy.
The conference, presented by the Association for Environmental Health and Sciences Foundation (AEHS), will be held virtually from October 19 to 23, 2020. The AEHS East conference brings together hundreds of attendees from state and federal agencies, the military, industry, environmental consulting, and academia to present on a wide variety of environmental topics.
Haley and Aldrich’s staff will serve as a session chair as well as presenting two platforms and a technical poster. Details of their involvement are listed below:
- On October 19 from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m., Technical Expert Janine Commerford will chair Session 02, “Enhancing Remediation Outcomes through Planning and Assessment.” This session involves six platform presentations that feature topics including the sustainable remediation of a manufactured gas plant, 3-D modeling to support groundwater management, and in situ treatment technologies for VOC remediation.
- The final platform in Session 02 will be “Transforming Boston’s Waterfront: A Brownfields Development Case Study,” presented by Haley & Aldrich Project Manager Lee Penwell from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. This presentation will detail how the Haley & Aldrich team brought a highly contaminated Boston Harbor site to regulatory closure, where it now hosts a vibrant new multi-family residential complex with public amenities that bring new life to the long-abandoned site. Technical Expert Keith Johnson co-authored this case study with Penwell.
- On October 22 from 1:30 to 2:00 p.m., Technical Expert Jay Peters will present on a recent study co-authored with Haley & Aldrich Staff Engineer Jessica Wey and James Occhialini, Vice President of Alpha Analytical. Their platform, “Distribution of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances in New England Rivers,” details the growing body of evidence suggesting that the introduction of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances into the environment may stem from numerous point and non-point sources.
- The technical poster created by Project Manager Sean Carroll and co-author Senior Technical Specialist Maris Mann-Stadt presents reflections on the outcomes of a reactive cap remedy installed over soft river sediments containing coal tar NAPL (non-aqueous phase liquid). Their poster, “Reactive Capping of NAPL-Impacted Sediments: Some Lessons Learned during Remedy Implementation,” will include a session with the authors on October 20 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
