Nick Machairas, leader in artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in the engineering and environmental industry, joins Haley & Aldrich

Burlington, Mass., June 9, 2021 – Haley & Aldrich announced today that Nick Machairas, Ph.D., has joined the firm as its Data and Analytics Leader. Machairas is an expert in advanced geotechnical and geoenvironmental data analytics, combining artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to offer sophisticated data-driven workflows and recommendations that go beyond traditional approaches, leading to safer, more efficient, and more cost-effective solutions.

“There is tremendous untapped potential for the use of advanced data analytics and AI for our clients and for the geo-profession in general,” said Haley & Aldrich’s Chief Innovation Officer Ben Chandler. “The opportunities are endless – from better characterization of the subsurface more quickly, to delivering more accurate models for contaminant transport, to predicting catastrophic failures in dams, tunnels, and other critical infrastructure systems, among many others. We’re thrilled that Nick has joined Haley & Aldrich and can partner with our staff and clients to uncover that potential.”

Machairas is a geoprofessional, lecturer, and entrepreneur with deep expertise in software engineering, modern data management, and predictive analytics. His early research and project efforts focused on applying advanced data analytics to deep foundations and have since evolved to include intelligent assistants that enable synergistic human-machine engineering design workflows.

“A core Haley & Aldrich principle is that in order to deliver exceptional client experiences, relentless innovation is required,” Machairas said. “I share in that commitment and am excited to deliver on this principle by partnering with the company’s staff and clients to deliver cutting-edge services by seamlessly combining AI, modern data management, and software engineering.”

Machairas founded Groundwork AI, a high-tech and engineering venture offering custom data management and machine learning solutions to facilitate smarter, safer, and more cost-effective infrastructure monitoring, design, and construction. He is a lecturer at New York University (NYU) and Columbia University, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in Computer Programming, Machine Learning, Modern Database Management Systems, and Engineering Leadership and Ethics.

Machairas is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and is an active member in several standing committees, including the American Society of Civil Engineers and Geo-Institute’s Data Interchange for Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Specialists (DIGGS), Deep Foundations, and Innovation committees as well as the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Instrumentation and Bridge Foundation committees. He has a Doctorate of Philosophy from NYU in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering, a Master of Science in Civil (Structural) Engineering from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of NYU.
