A May 2025 article in the magazine Airport Improvement spotlighted Haley & Aldrich’s cleanup of contamination at an airport in Kingman, Arizona.
Kingman Municipal Airport recently celebrated the successful conclusion of a decades-long environmental remediation effort, which addressed groundwater and soil contamination dating back to World War II military operations. Aluminum dross, containing hazardous concentrations of cadmium and lead, left from recycling surplus aircraft was buried and paved over. But rainwater leached through and reacted with the buried waste, creating heat and gases that caused the tarmac to heave and disrupted airport operations.
“In the process of creating this heat and the gases, the dross also generated hydrogen and ammonia, which are flammable and toxic. This science project should never have been growing underneath an airport,” said Pejman Eshraghi in the article, “Kingman Municipal Closes the Book on Underground Contamination After World War II.”
A Haley & Aldrich team led by Pejman oversaw environmental cleanup, waste disposal, and reconstruction of the affected areas, finally making it possible for Kingman to resolve the issue. As one airport tenant states in the article, “We now have a beautiful ramp area with a renewed infrastructure. [. . .] It’s so very critical for existing and future businesses.”
