Burlington, Mass., Oct. 28, 2026 — Haley & Aldrich announced today that Murray Einarson, service leader for contaminated site management, has received a GRA Lifetime Achievement Award from the Groundwater Resources Association of California (GRA).
The annual award celebrates individuals who have dedicated their careers to the groundwater industry and have been pioneers in their fields of expertise. Haley & Aldrich’s Elie Haddad, principal consultant, presented the award on behalf of the GRA’s board of directors at its Annual Meeting and Awards Luncheon on Sept. 29, 2026.
“Murray has helped us change the way we manage, investigate, understand, and remediate groundwater,” said Elie. “His passion for the science and his work have profoundly influenced practitioners, regulators, researchers, and groundwater programs around the world.”
Over the course of Murray’s four decades in the industry, techniques and technologies he developed have become industry standards and earned him international recognition as a thought leader in hydrogeology. He has invented or co-developed several site assessment technologies, including three for which he holds patents, and he led the industry’s adoptions of high-resolution site characterization and environmental sequence stratigraphy. The numerous federally funded research projects he led or collaborated on continue to shape groundwater science. Owing to Murray’s achievements, practitioners worldwide now obtain higher-quality hydrogeologic data and deliver better remediation outcomes at significantly lower costs.
Murray’s extraordinary record of leadership, teaching, and service has likewise had a profound and lasting impact on the profession. He has educated hundreds of hydrogeologists at conferences and technical seminars and in courses at Stanford University, the Princeton Remediation Course, and the University of Waterloo Field School. California’s regulators have also benefited from Murray’s direct instruction and from guidance documents he has authored or co-developed. He has published prolifically on site characterization and remediation, and his leadership of professional organizations, including six years on the GRA’s board of directors, has raised the profession’s profile and empowered its practitioners to make meaningful environmental impacts.
“Murray is a household name in the GRA community. He’s a rock star,” said Elie. “But his legacy is about much more than technology and publications. It is about people. He has always been willing to share his knowledge, challenge conventional thinking, and encourage others to look deeper and think differently.”
