PFAS Technical and Regulatory Guidance Document (PFAS-1)

In January 2026, the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) published updated guidance on PFAS-related science and practical considerations for environmental professionals. Haley & Aldrich technical experts Catherine Regan, Heather Gosack, and Raghu Suribhatla contributed to this guidance, sharing their breadth of knowledge on the current state of PFAS science, technology, and regulation.

ITRC’s PFAS Technical and Regulatory Web Guidance Document (PFAS-1) aims to support state and federal environmental staff as well as other decision-makers while they investigate and manage the class of difficult-to-remediate chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Heather and Raghu contributed to sections of the guidance covering site investigation and other topics, and Catherine supported development of the PFAS and vapor intrusion fact sheet.

Together, the updated guidance material “reflects the rapidly evolving PFAS landscape and provides actionable, science-based information to support more informed, consistent, and effective site management decisions,” says ITRC. It provides new case studies and summarizes the scientific literature to date, and it also illuminates questions that remain about how to trace, detect, and remediate PFAS in environmental media.
