U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing testimony on pending air quality monitoring legislation

Senior Technical Expert Bart Eklund recently testified at a U.S. Senate legislative hearing that examined pending bills before the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works: S. 1345, the Comprehensive National Mercury Monitoring Act; S. 2476, the Environmental Justice Air Quality Monitoring Act of 2021; and S. ___, the Public Health Air Quality Act.

Eklund spoke on current trends in air monitoring and continuous data collection. He suggested that two of the bills put too much faith in the ability of low-cost sensors to provide reliable data and argued that other, more rigorous measurement approaches would better achieve the objectives set forth in the bills.
