Haley & Aldrich receives Department of Defense funding for PFAS and AI research projects

Burlington, Mass., August 24, 2026 — Haley & Aldrich’s Applied Research team has landed three new U.S. Department of Defense (DOD)–funded research projects, continuing the team’s momentum in the treatment, knowledge management, and technology transfer of a group of chemicals known as PFAS.

The awards — from the DOD’s highly competitive Environmental Security Technology Certification Program and Air Force Civil Engineer Center Broad Agency Announcement Program — highlight the breadth of innovation happening across the company. Together, these projects will expand Haley & Aldrich’s impact within the DOD and for clients by advancing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances destruction technology, building smarter ways to access technical knowledge through artificial intelligence, and sharing lessons learned through published case studies.

Here is a look at the three funded projects:

  • PFAS destruction using EradiFluor, a UV and sulfite-based technology
    Led by John Xiong, Ph.D., P.E.; Mike Calhoun, P.G., CHG; Raul Tenorio, Ph.D.; and Yida Fang, Ph.D., P.E., this project will demonstrate an efficient, sustainable, cost-effective, and high-throughput PFAS destruction system for treating contaminated water. The team will demonstrate the higher-throughput EradiFluor 2.0 system at a military base in Florida. This is the fourth round of DOD funding to support EradiFluor development and demonstration.
  • Enhancing technology transfer through AI-powered knowledge management and decision support
    This project will develop and demonstrate an AI agent that will help users quickly access and apply insights from DOD’s vast library of technical reports, guidance documents, and research findings related to remediation challenges, including PFAS. Project leaders are John Xiong; Nick Machairas, Ph.D.; Raghavendra Suribhatla Maruti, Ph.D., P.E.; Jacob Aldrich; Jialin Dong; and Mike Calhoun.
  • Case studies from the environmental restoration program area: A supplemental article series in Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation.
    Led by Sarah Mass, M.S., P.E., this project will support case study articles that show how DOD-funded technologies have been applied at real sites for groundwater management. These articles will be published in the National Ground Water Association’s journal Groundwater Monitoring & Remediation.
