Haley & Aldrich’s Principal Consultant Helder Costa and Senior Technical Experts Laura McWilliams and Theodor Sauer coauthored Randy Jordan (Natural Spectrum) and Mark Cejas’ (ChemQuants) article PAH source differentiation between historical MGP and significant urban influences for sediments in San Francisco Bay for the May 2021 issue of ScienceDirect’s Marine Pollution Bulletin.  

This article details a study to determine and differentiate the historical and potential ongoing sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) to nearshore sediments in a very active portion of San Francisco Bay. PAHs are a class of chemicals produced when coal, oil, gas, wood, garbage, tobacco, and other materials are burned, and they are also naturally occurring components of crude oils and refined petroleum products. They are regulated constituents because they are considered to have negative health impacts at higher levels of exposure. This evaluation used complementary forensic approaches to differentiate sources of PAHs associated with historical manufactured gas plant (MGP) operations from other historical and ongoing combined sources termed “urban influence.”
